About Word Chain
Word Chain is a word puzzle game built on one rule, and a free word game you can start in a single click. You start from one glowing word and build outward, and every new word has to share a run of letters with the one before it. PLANET to NETWORK to WORKSHOP — that is the whole idea and the whole difficulty.
You get 180 seconds and ten words. Ten is not many, which is what makes it a game rather than an exercise: a chain built from lazy two-letter overlaps will always lose to one where every link was chosen. Your last word glows at the centre and the connection bar turns green the instant your typing links up to it.
Scoring rewards ambition steeply. A two-letter overlap scores 20 and a three scores 40, but four is 80, five is 140, six is 220, and seven or more starts at 320 and adds another 80 for every letter beyond that. One good six-letter link is worth more than five short ones — and you only have ten links either way.
On top of the overlap there are bonuses for rare words, graded from common through uncommon and rare to exotic and worth up to four times the base; for hub words whose fragments open lots of future links; and for every fresh fragment you are the first to discover in a run. Top-ten chains go on the global leaderboard.
How to build a high-scoring word chain
- Start from the glowing word at the centre of the board — that is your first link.
- Type a word sharing a contiguous run of letters with it. Two letters is the minimum; the bar turns green the moment it connects.
- Your new word becomes the centre, and you chain onward from that.
- Chase length: 2 letters scores 20, 3 scores 40, 4 scores 80, 5 scores 140, 6 scores 220, and 7 or more starts at 320 and climbs by 80 per extra letter.
- Stack bonuses on top — rare and exotic words multiply the base up to four times, and hub words and fresh fragments both pay extra.
- Keep going until the 180 seconds run out or your chain hits ten words, whichever comes first.

Word Chain tips — finding the long overlaps
- Chase long overlaps, not fast ones. A single six-letter link scores 220 against 40 for a three, and you only get ten words either way.
- End on a busy fragment. Finishing a word with something like -STONE or -LIGHT leaves you a dozen options; an awkward tail leaves you burning clock.
- Take the unusual word when you can see both. Rarity multiplies the base score up to four times, so an exotic four-letter link can outscore a common six.
- Do not save your best idea for word ten. The clock ends more runs than the word limit does, so play the big link the moment you spot it.
For word game players
If you play a daily word game, this scratches a related but different itch. Wordle is deduction — you are narrowing down one hidden answer from feedback. Word Chain is generation: nothing is hidden, and the difficulty is finding the best link you can see rather than working out one you cannot.
The closest classic relative is the word ladder, where each step changes one letter. This is looser and faster — any shared run of two or more letters connects — but the instinct is the same, and vocabulary genuinely pays: rare words multiply your score by up to four times.

Word Chain questions, answered
How is Word Chain scored?
By the length of the letter run two words share. Two letters scores 20, three 40, four 80, five 140 and six 220. Seven or more starts at 320 and adds 80 for every letter beyond that, so long overlaps are worth far more than several short ones.
What counts as a valid link?
Any contiguous run of at least two letters shared between your new word and the one before it — PLANET into NETWORK works on NET. The run has to be unbroken, and the connection bar turns green as soon as what you are typing actually links up.
What are the rare-word bonuses?
Words are graded common, uncommon, rare or exotic by how unusual they are, and the rarer tiers multiply your base score by up to four times. When you can see both a common and an unusual link of similar length, the unusual one is almost always the better play.
Why do hub words matter?
A hub word is one whose fragments open a lot of possible next links, and the game pays a bonus for playing one. The practical value is bigger than the bonus though — ending on a busy fragment like -STONE keeps your options open, and running out of ideas wastes the clock.
How do you use all ten words before time runs out?
Play big links as you see them rather than saving them. Most runs end on the 180-second clock rather than the ten-word limit, so hesitating over a perfect link costs more than taking a good one — and always leave yourself an easy fragment to chain from.
Is Word Chain like Wordle?
