About Blocky Rugby

Blocky Rugby is an online rugby game with no full-time whistle — a rugby sport game where the try line keeps moving. You have the ball, the pitch never runs out, and the defence gets measurably worse for you every 250 metres.

That last part is the game. The first phase is slow single tacklers. At 250 metres they speed up. At 500 a third of them come at you fast. From 750 onwards the whole defence compounds by ten percent per phase, and somewhere in there a defender arrives at triple the normal speed with your name on him. The early metres are nearly free; the late ones are earned one gap at a time.

You move by dragging across the screen, sliding the full width of the pitch rather than hopping between fixed lanes. Leaping over a tackler costs 10 stars, which turns the stars scattered downfield into a budget: spend them on leaps, or hold 25 back for a revive. You get three revives per run, and holding stars for them is almost always the higher-scoring choice.

Distance is measured in metres, your personal best follows you between runs, and anything in the global top ten gets your name on the leaderboard.

How to run further in Blocky Rugby

  1. Drag left and right to run anywhere across the width of the pitch.
  2. Swipe up to leap over an incoming tackler — each leap costs 10 stars.
  3. Collect the stars scattered down the pitch. They are your leaps and, at 25 each, your revives.
  4. Expect the defence to change every 250 metres: faster after the first phase, then a third of them sprinting, then compounding by ten percent per phase from 750 metres on.
  5. Watch for the tripled-speed defender in the later phases — he closes far quicker than the rest and cannot be outrun sideways.
  6. When you are tackled, spend 25 stars to get back up. Three revives per run, then that's the run.

Blocky Rugby tips — beating the fast defenders

  • Running around a tackler is free; leaping costs 10 stars. Save the leap for when both sides are genuinely covered.
  • Never let your star count sit below 25 mid-run. That is a whole revive, and a revive is worth more metres than two leaps ever will be.
  • Pick your line before the wave arrives. Committing early gives you room to adjust; reacting at the last moment leaves you nowhere to go, especially past 750 metres.
  • Treat 250, 500 and 750 metres as gear changes. The defence you learned in the first phase will not survive the third — start playing tighter before it catches you out.

For rugby fans

This is not a rugby simulation — there are no scrums, no lineouts and no kicking game. What it borrows is the single moment rugby does better than any other sport: a ball carrier in open field with the defence closing, deciding whether to step, fend or take contact.

If you have played, the read will feel familiar — you are looking for the gap between two defenders rather than the space in front of you, and committing early beats reacting late. If you have only watched, it is the part of the game you already enjoy, extracted and repeated until you drop the ball.

Blocky Rugby questions, answered

What are the stars for in Blocky Rugby?

Stars are currency for two things: leaping over a tackler costs 10, and getting back up after a tackle costs 25. Since running around a defender is free, most long runs come from hoarding stars for revives rather than spending them on leaps.

How many revives do you get?

Three per run, at 25 stars each. Once all three are spent the next tackle ends the run for good. Because they are capped rather than unlimited, the practical strategy is to keep at least 25 stars banked at all times from the first phase onward.

When should you leap instead of running around?

Only when both sides are covered or a cluster of tacklers arrives together. Running sideways costs nothing and keeps your star bank intact, so a leap you did not need is 10 stars missing from the revive that would have extended your run.

How does the defence get harder?

Every 250 metres. Phase one is slow single tacklers; at 250 metres they get faster, at 500 about a third of them sprint, and from 750 onwards the whole defence compounds by ten percent per phase. A defender at triple the usual speed also appears in the later phases.

How is your score measured?

By distance in metres, counted from the moment you take the ball. Your personal best is kept between runs, and any run that reaches the global top ten lets you leave your name on the leaderboard — the current top ten is listed further up this page.

Is Blocky Rugby based on real rugby?

Only loosely. It takes the open-field running and tackle-evasion part of rugby and drops everything else — no scrums, lineouts or kicking. The read it asks for is real though: find the gap between two defenders rather than the space directly ahead.
